"The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament" (CCC 1601). Throughout all of human history the dignity and importance of marriage has been recognized by all peoples for its crucial place in society. By its very nature, marriage is ordered toward the well-being of spouses and those children born from the marital union into the family, whose lives depend on their father and mother for protection, guidance, shelter, nourishment and education. Jesus spoke in all three synoptic gospels of the lifelong commitment involved in marriage, of its permanency and indissolubility unto death. He indicated that from the very beginning, God intended marriage to involve the total self-giving of the spouses as they become one flesh in marriage (see Gen. 2:24). For these reasons and others, the Church takes marriage seriously and requires a period of preparation in order to insure that couples inter into the marriage union faithfully, with proper knowledge, intention and commitment, aware of the responsibilities of marriage as well as its many blessings in the life of the couple.
